Unresolved pain and trauma

Master-Mind Wisdom Coaching and Counseling These past two years have been a hundred years long, haven’t they?

Between workplace upheavals, heart-rending headlines, limited social interaction, crippling uncertainty, and concern for loved ones, it’s enough to overwhelm anyone. And everyone.

The gap between where we are and where we want to be just keeps growing and growing.

When I look around, (okay, when I look at my own life 🤷‍♀️) strategies for managing the gap abound… run faster, dig deeper, cry louder, stay up later, or maybe just pull the covers back over my head and stay in bed.

And those strategies work. For a minute.

But then reality hits, the gap keeps growing, and I think we’re all realizing that the bone-deep weariness isn’t going away anytime soon.

What’s a Christ-centered coaching and counseling supposed to do?

Hmmm… maybe it’s easier to start with what not to do. (These may or may not be drawn from personal experience 🤣.)

Strategies That DON’T Work

1. Denial - “Since God called us to it, He’ll magically bring us through it.”

These are the days when we decide to grab a second donut, distract ourselves with doom-scrolling, or watch one more webinar hoping that this time the magic answer will appear.

It doesn’t.

So, we dabble the day away until the next day comes when we can do it all again or…

2. Determination – Through sheer brute strength, we’re determined to break through every barrier convinced, “If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.”

And that determination may actually work for a week, a month, or even a year or so.

But as this crazy pandemic wears on, our lives are beginning to look like a game of “Wack-A-Mole” gone bad with the signs of burnout, anxiety, and exhaustion popping up faster than we can beat them down.

All of which leads to…

3. Despair“Surely God didn’t intend being in business to be so hard, so He must not have intended for me to do this at all.”

This leads to utter despair.

Thankfully, my friend, there is one more way to bridge the gap…

A gentler, quieter, less traveled way…

The Invitation Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge our complete inadequacy to handle life on our own. Admit that this really is too hard, and we really aren’t enough to cope with a chronic crisis that never seems to end.

And since none of these too-great-to-bear burdens or too-hard-to-be-solved problems are a surprise to God, what if this global crisis (and all that comes with it) isn’t an obstacle, but an invitation instead?

A quiet, compelling, and irresistible invitation to embrace our inadequacy so that we can truly experience the beauty and sufficiency of Christ.

This is a gap that God CAN fill, and as He does, we learn that when we are…

  • Weak - Chris is strong

  • Confused – Christ is wise

  • Rejected – Christ still accepts us

  • Anxious – Christ is our peace

  • Discouraged – Christ is our hope

  • Scared – Christ is our rock

  • Faithless – Christ is faithful

In this world of relentless uncertainty, isn’t it a joy to know our hope rests on our very certain God?

I’m so glad we are on this journey together.

Please let me know if I can pray for you in any specific way today.
